Chapter 15

The following day, Lazyscales was accompanied into town by Martha. She wanted to slap him into a shock collar, but he refused and threatened to tear it apart if she even tried. Finally, they settled on a compromise. Martha would stay close to him at all times, and if he so much as looked like he was about to eat somebody, she’d shoot him with electrified darts. They wouldn’t drop him, not the same way a collar could, but they would be more than enough to get his attention.

It wasn’t really a compromise that favored either of them. On the one hand, Lazyscales very much doubted her electric darts could do a whole lot of damage. On the other hand, he had no intention of eating anyone, so he didn’t think it would really be an issue. He walked behind her truck as she drove slowly through town. People on the streets eyed him curiously as he passed, and cars stopped to give him space to maneuver. If he didn’t know any better, he’d have sworn they’d never seen a dragon before.

Martha led him towards a squat brick building that was wider than all the others around it. Seeing it gave Lazyscales pause. There was a strange, almost nostalgic feeling that he got when he looked at the building. He could have sworn he’d seen it before, but yet he couldn’t remember ever being here.

“What is this place?” He asked as Martha stepped out of her truck and thumbed the dart gun on her hip.

“Barrington Hills High School,” she said, casually motioning for him to follow her around the back.

“It is an institution of learning?”

“More like the first step in the prison-industrial complex,” Martha snorted, shaking her head. “Kids sit at desks for eight hours a day while the standardized curriculum is drilled into the heads.”

“You hold this place in contempt,” Lazyscales noted, frowning first at Martha, then at the school.

“Just about everyone who attended it does. High school ain’t no picnic.”

Lazyscales didn’t risk any further comments as they continued to walk around the school's side until they came upon a field. Across from the field, though, stood a far more impressive structure. It was nearly as tall as the school, but it was decorated with the emblem of a bear charging with a peculiar brown egg tucked under his arm.

“That’s the football stadium, where our good friend Rocktooth is getting set up,” Martha said, sighing. “I still think this is a bad idea,” she muttered, crossing her arms.

“You do? I was under the impression that Grace thought it genius,” Lazyscales pointed out.

“She does, but I’m not comfortable with the thought of having so many people in a confined space with you monsters,” Martha grumbled, lowering her arms. She rested on hand on the dart gun hanging from her hip, as though half-considering unholstering it and zapping Lazyscales on the spot.

Lazyscales growled at the use of the M-word but didn’t comment on it as he noticed Martha’s grip tightening on the dart gun.
